The Virtual Film Festival is based on the belief that grass-roots documentaries are increasingly influencing social change. The festival is an ongoing series of documentary film showings and director interviews, all taking place online.
The primary purpose of this always-on festival is to showcase fact-based, investigative films that challenge institutionalized narratives in important ways. Institutions are prone to crafting public narratives that claim benefits to the individual or consumer, when in fact their actions often harm the individual as part of the growth models of the institutions. This seems particularly evident in the areas that have become our primary festival themes: education, food, financial/banking, health, warfare, and governance.
We also plan to focus on other areas that are highly impacted by the power of these institutional narratives (e.g., environmental issues, or the prison system), as well as on solution-seeking endeavors (e.g., small-scale economics)--where fact-based documentary film-making is playing an increasingly important role in our civil dialog.
